Colour up your garden. If you are not into maintaining a grand billowing mixed annual, perennial kaleidoscope of colour, then what are your options for providing a changing landscape? Deciduous trees, particularly the flowering kind like Magnolias and colour trees like Liquid-amber will start the show. Less well known specimens, Gleditsia ’Rubies & Lace’ and ‘Sunburst’ both provide contrasting colour. Acer, Cordyline, Acacia baileyana, Ash, Beech, Zelkova and Gingko all show great foliage with Melia, Eucalyptus, Metrosiderous, Jacaranda, Chestnut, Callistemon, Oak, Prunus and plenty more providing spectacular floral shows at various times.
For borders, under planting and smaller gardens Iresine, Hymenospermum ‘Gold Nugget’, Loretapealum, Phormium, Clivia (for its gloss), Bromeliads, Leucodendron ‘Safari Sunset’, Photinia, Pieris and Grevillea, all provide long lasting foliage colour. Floral displays that stand out include Hebe, Hydrangea, Michelia, Euryops, Camellia, Rhododendron, Viburnum, and Cassia. Even the fruit can provide great colour with some of the palms producing great clusters of reds and oranges like Cotoneaster, Cragus, Pyracantha, Chestnut, Schefflera, Tamarillo and then of course citrus, pip fruit, stone fruit and Guava.
Bark can also provide interesting textures with Melaleuca, ‘paperbark’ being one of the best examples.
