A key aspect to creating a great landscape design is finding the perfect product and finish for the area.
Here at Plantpro we are lucky to have access to a natural product prized by designers throughout the country. What’s even better, it’s sourced locally.
Northland Oceanic Schist also known as Paradise Stone paving is produced by Paradise Quarry right here in Whangarei.
What is Paradise Stone?
A type of sedimentary limestone formed 30 million years ago when Whangarei was a giant tropical lagoon. Paradise Stone has very distinct lines and natural colors. These create a texture and finish that separates Northland Oceanic Schist from any other commercially quarried stones in New Zealand.
Predominantly a bluey-grey color it also features earthy tones, bronzes to sandy browns, whites and even greener highlights.
Each piece of Paradise Stone is extracted and split in the quarry and sections of stone can be hand selected to meet the specific requirements for each project.
Feature rocks, walls, steps and paving are just a few of the common uses for Paradise Stone.
The team at Plantpro have a depth of experience installing Paradise Stone in both 25mm and 50mm thicknesses.
Why use Paradise Stone?
- Natural stone is the most durable material and will show very few signs of wearing even after decades of use.
- It is found in nature in a virtually finished form, only resized and split to the required thickness. This means little energy is used in its production making it carbon friendly.
- Paradise Stone is unique, no two stones are the same and by using different laying techniques you are sure to get a one-of-a-kind finish.
What is Paradise Stone Crazy Paving – How do we install it?
The term crazy paving is used when we lay Paradise Stone down in a random fashion. Each stone is a different size, and shape as opposed to traditional paving with symmetrical, uniform pavers.
Our team take the time to look at each individual slab and see how their natural shapes fit together, like putting together a giant outdoor puzzle. Minimal cuts are made to the stone slabs to allow the best fit.
There are two ways Plantpro installs crazy paving, set on a sand base or fixed to a concrete mortar base.
Concrete Mortar Base Examples
Using this method of installation pavers are mortared in place with a fixed grout between each slab resulting in a polished, architectural finish. This is a popular choice when using Paradise Stone in a more formal setting.
Sand Base Examples
If you are after a more rustic finish laying Paradise Stone directly on a sand base and edging with pebbles or sand is a good option. This style melds well with pebble or pumice pathways in a garden setting.
Paradise Stone – crazy paving is a design element which will make your landscape special and unique. The high quality materials available locally, combined with the skills and experience that Plantpro offer ensure we can create a sustainable, stylish setting that adds value to both your property and lifestyle.
